looking back at your PRELIMINARY task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
At the beginning of the year, our preliminary task was a basic over view of what we could achieve. To be fair, it was of very poor standard as we had little knowledge of camera shots that need to be used and we were very poor actors. Its purpose was to allow us to review ours and others in order to improve our understanding and ability of Media, as a subject, and aid our OTS. It was also the first stepping stone in the creation of our final piece and this is now present in our OTs. Overall we feel we have improved as a group and as individuals in the field of media.
Editing
When we were first introduced to the world of editing, none of us had much knowledge on the subject at all. Some of us didn't even know what editing was, in the following lessons we were taught numerous techniques on how to use the editing programme Final Cut, following the lessons we all had a savvy understanding of what editing was. When put into practice, we first used editing techniques on our Preliminary task, which is extremely visible due to the mediocre screening, acting and editing. However, we used this as a resource to improve our skills. As time went on we understood more about editing and now, in our OTS, high quality, edited clips that really show how far we have come in the past few months.
Filming
At the beginning we had no knowledge of any camera techniques used when filming. We could only use a standard mid shot as this was the easiest to film and allowed average filming to look almost decent. As we attended more lessons we learned about different techniques, such as: Shot Reverse shot, the 180 degrees rule, Over the shoulder shot, Camera angles and many other different shots that improved our camera work. The 180 degrees rule allowed us to decide whether or filming was eligible to produce or filmed correctly. This, pared with the shot reverse shot made a great combination to film extremely high quality confrontations between two or more characters. Once we implemented camera angles, it enabled us to implement a sense of power in our filming, if one character has power over another. On the whole the new knowledge and techniques we gained improved our ability to film decent shots and, in the long run, helped boost our OTS quality.
